Updated XML File Layouts for the OAS CAHPS Survey

The OAS CAHPS Survey Coordination Team has made changes to the XML file layouts for the OAS CAHPS Survey. The revised Standard, DSRS, and Zero XML File layouts are now available here on the Survey Materials page.

The XML file layouts included in Appendix K, L, and M in the Outpatient and Ambulatory Surgery CAHPS Survey Protocols and Guidelines Manual, Version 1.2 posted on December 21, 2015 are no longer current. We are currently revising the Protocols and Guidelines Manual, and will alert vendors when version 1.3 of the Protocols and Guidelines Manual has been posted to the OAS CAHPS website.

Changes to the OAS CAHPS XML File Layouts

  • Header Record/Eligible Patients: The word “which” has been changed to “that” in the Description column for XML element Eligible Patients. This change only applies to the Standard and Zero XML file layouts.
  • Header Record/Type of Header Record: The number “1” has been changed to “0” in the Valid Values column for XML element Type of Header Record. This change only applies to the Zero XML file layout.
  • Header Record/Patients Served for the Stratum: The allowable patient range “0-999999” has been changed to “1-999999” and “M=Unknown/Missing” has been added to the Valid Values column for XML element Patients Served for the Stratum. In addition, the Data Type for this XML element has been changed from “Numeric” to “Alphanumeric”. This change only applies to the DSRS XML file layout.
  • Header Record/Patients Served: The allowable patient range “1-999999” has been changed to “0-999999” in the Valid Values column for XML element Patients Served. This change only applies to the Zero XML file layout.
  • Patient Administrative Data Record/Survey Language: Added the word “was” to the Description column for XML element Survey Language. This text now displays as, “Identify language in which survey was completed”. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q20: The number “2” has been changed to “1” in the Field Size column for XML element Q20 Bleeding Result. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q24: Un-capitalized the words “No” and “Yes” in the Valid Values column for XML element Q24 Recommend. The text for these response options now displays as “no” and “yes”. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q30: The text “Latino/a” has been changed to “Latino” in the Description column for XML element Q30 Ethnicity. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q31: The text “Chicano/a” has been changed to “Chicano” and “Latino/a” has been changed to “Latino” in the Description column for XML element Q31 Group. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q32 Race Asian-Phone: The text “Race Asian Indian-phone” has been changed to “Race Asian-phone” in the XML element column for Q32 Race Asian-phone. There are 3 bolded instances of this change in the XML element column. The text “Asian Indian” has been changed to “Asian” in the Valid Values column for XML element Q32 Race Asian-phone. These changes only apply to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q32 Native Hawaiian-Phone: Added a new row to the file layout, Q32 Race Native Hawaiian-phone, in order to capture telephone survey response data for race category 5 in question 32 of the OAS CAHPS telephone interview. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q32 Race None of Above-Phone: Added “ ” to the example text in the XML element column for Q32 Race None of Above-Phone. The example text now displays as, “ racenativehawaiian-phone 1 /racenativehawaiian-phone ”. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
  • Patient Response Record/Q32a Race AsianIndian-Phone: Removed the extra space in the text “ raceasianindian-phone ” in the example text in the XML element column for Q32a Race AsianIndian-Phone. The example text now displays as, “ raceasianindian-phone ” and “ raceasianindian-phone 1 /raceasianindian-phone ”. There are 2 bolded instances of this change in the XML element column. This change only applies to the Standard and DSRS XML file layouts.
