Expansion of the Range of OAS CAHPS-Eligible CPT Codes for Surgery

The American Medical Association (AMA) recently added 9 codes to the front end of the range of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4¹) Codes for Surgery. The new range of CPT Codes for Surgery that are OAS CAHPS-eligible is 10004-69990. A brief description of the newly added codes (10004-10012) are provided below.

• 10004, Under Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures
• 10005, Under Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures
• 10006, Under Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures
• 10007, Fine needle aspiration biopsy, including fluoroscopic guidance; first lesion
• 10008, Fine needle aspiration biopsy, including fluoroscopic guidance; each additional lesion
• 10009, Fine needle aspiration biopsy, including CT guidance; first lesion
• 10010, Under Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures
• 10011, Under Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures
• 10012, Under Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures

CMS and the Coordination Team are in the process of updating the documentation available on the OAS CAHPS website to reflect this change in the Codes for Surgery range.

Approved survey vendors are advised to do the following as soon as possible:

• update their systems to accept this expanded range of CPT Codes for Surgery in the patient information files;
• update patient eligibility criteria and algorithms (if applicable) for sampling; and
• update range of CPT Codes for Surgery when classifying a patient's surgical category for Surgical Category 4 (Other) 10004 -19999, 30000-39999, 50000-64999, and 68900-69990.
