OMB Expiration Date Updated in 2022 Survey Materials
folder_openSurvey Materialscalendar_todayPosted December 15, 2021

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) renewed clearance for national implementation of the OAS CAHPS Survey. The new expiration date is November 30, 2024. The OMB control number remains the same (0938-1240).

Various planned survey materials for 2022 available on the OAS CAHPS website (https://oascahps.org/Survey-Materials) have been updated with this OMB expiration date, including the mail questionnaire, web questionnaire, and OMB disclosure notice documents.

Please note that the OAS CAHPS Survey Protocols and Guidelines Manual, Version 6.0 will not be updated at this time. It will be updated with the OMB expiration date when all pending survey materials are ready. During this time, vendors should rely on the standalone survey materials for the OMB expiration date information.

What does the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) expect vendors to do with mail survey materials administered for the November and December 2021 sample months?

  • Approved vendors administering data collection for the November and December 2021 sample months should continue to administer the "2021" version of the OAS CAHPS Survey materials (available on the OAS CAHPS website, here: https://oascahps.org/Survey-Materials/Current-Survey-Materials). The "2022" version of the OAS CAHPS Survey (available here: https://oascahps.org/Survey-Materials) should not be administered as part of data collection (for any CMS-approved mode) until the January 2022 sample month is fielded.
  • "2021" versions of the mail survey materials that reach sample members on January 1, 2022 or after for these two sample months should be revised as follows:
    • Vendors that print their OAS CAHPS mail questionnaires in bulk and in advance can continue to use the pre-printed materials with the December 31, 2021 OMB expiration date (i.e., no revisions needed).
    • Vendors that print their OAS CAHPS mail questionnaires on demand (i.e., on a rolling basis, as needed) should update the OMB expiration date in the "2021" version of the survey to the new expiration date.
  • Starting with data collection for the January 2022 sample month, all approved vendors should begin implementing the "2022" version of the survey, which includes the updated OMB expiration date.
